Nuž, podľa toho, čo zatiaľ viem, si veľmi populárna autorka kresťanskej fikcie pre teenagerov a YA. Prosím, mohla by si nám o sebe prezradiť niečo viac? Niečo, čo len tak ľahko nenájdeme na Internete, chápeš.
Nuž, žijem v Kansas City, čo je presne v strede Spojených štátov. Nie je to práve najtrendovejšie miesto pre život, ale je skvelé na výchovu rodiny. Obaja s manželom sme tu vyrástli a máme štvorročnú dcérku McKeenu a takmer dvojročného syna Connora.
Čo však asi mnohých prekvapí, je, že som nikdy nechodila na vysokú. Chcela som a párkrát som bola aj zapísaná, ale vždy som prepadla. Nakoniec som sa teda rozhodla, že budem pracovať na plný úväzok a písať. Vysoká škola je úžasná skúsenosť, do ktorej druhých určite povzbudzujem,len skrátka nie je súčasťou plánu pre mňa.

Well, I live in Kansas City, which is right in the middle of the United States. It’s not the hippest place to live, but it’s great for raising a family. My husband and I were both raised here, and we have a 4-year-old daughter, McKenna, and an almost-2-year-old son named Connor.
Something many are surprised to learn about me is that I never went to college. I intended to and was even enrolled at a couple, but it always fell through. Eventually I decided just to work full time and pursue getting published. College is a great experience that I encourage others to have, but it just wasn’t part of the plan for me.)
Prosím, môžeš nám povedať, čo ťa inšpirovalo k napísaniu kníh k Skyler?
Tak veľa vecí! Hlavne som chcela písať o postave, ktorá je úplne iná, ako som ja. Na stednej som sa dostala do situácie, kedy som bola fakt buchnutá (a takmer každý o tom vedel) do chalana, ktorý sa volala Ryan. Mimochodom, začala s ním chodiť moja "najlepšia kamoška". Potom sa odsťahovala a on a ja sme nakonioec spolu niekoľko mesiacov chodili. Ten vzťah bol vakt prepadák a, ako si sai viete predstaviť, vážne pokazil aj kamarátstvo. Celá tá Skylar-Eli-Jodi-Connorromantická zápletka má rozhodne svoje počiatky v tejto situácii.
(Please tell us, what inspired you to write a books about Skyler.
So many things! Mostly, I wanted to write a character who was extremely different than me. I had a situation in school where I had a huge, widely known crush on a boy named Ryan. My “best friend” started dating him anyway. And then she moved away and he and I eventually dated for a few months. It was a total flop of a relationship, and it severely damaged the friendship as you might imagine. The whole Skylar-Eli-Jodi-Connor romance thread definitely has its roots in that situation!)
Možeš nám, prosím povedať niečo o tejto sérii? Vieš, lebo veľa ľudí o nej ešte nepočulo.
Séria Obrátenie Skyler Hoytovej sleduje Skyler počas maturitného ročníka na strednej škole. Na začiatku sa Skyler stane kráľovnou školeskej elity. Problém je v tom, že už na vlastnej koži zažila, aký nebezpečný môže byť život v ktorom sa všetko točí len okolo zábavy a párty. A preto zloží sľub, že sa vzdá tohto spôsobu života a chce sa vrátiť späť ku svojim kresťanským koreňom. Stále však bojuje a trpí pre všetko, čo to zahŕňa: odísť zo svojej cool partie, usporiadať si priority a držať sa ďalej od frajera svojej najlepšej kamošky. Sú to fakt zábavné knihy! Príjemné letné čítanie.

The Reinvention of Skylar Hoyt series follows Skylar through her senior year of high school. At the beginning of the series, Skylar’s the queen of the in-crowd, but she’s discovered first hand how dangerous her party-all-the-time lifestyle is. So she vows to give up partying and wants to return to her Christian roots, only she struggles with everything that involves. Like giving up her group of cool friends, adjusting her priorities, and staying away from her best friend’s new boyfriend.
It’s a really fun series! Good summer reads.)
Na Slovensku nie je ešte žáner kresťanskej fikcie pre teenagerov (alebo YA) tak rozšírený ako v Spojených štátoch, takže, povedz nám niečo o tomto žánry. A prečo si myslíš, že je pre mladých dôležitý.
Myslím, že kresťanská beletria prešla za polsedných 5-10 rokov poriadny kus cesty. Vďaka knihám o Skyler Hoytovej som mohla písať o skutočných veciach, ktoré sa tu v Spojených štátoch teenagerom stávajú- ako znásilnenia, teenagerské tehotenstvo, alebo chodenie s niekým- s nulovou cenzúrou od môjho vydavateľstva. Pre mňa je to fakt veľká vec, že som mohla vykresliť tvrdosť a kostrbatosť skutočného života, ale zároveň aj vieru a autenticitu. Myslím, že pre mladých ľudí je to skvelý žáner, pretože tak môžu vidieť Skyler v situáciách, v ktorých sú možno oni sami- rozvod rodičov, podrážajúci kamaráti, randenie a tak ďalej-, ale zároveň môžu vidieť, ako cez to všetko preniká jej viera.
(In Slovakia, there is not the gender of Christian Fiction for teens (or YA) as much spreaded as in the US or so yet, so tell us something about this gender. And why u think it is important for young people.
I think Christian fiction has come SO far in the last 5 to 10 years. With the Skylar Hoyt series, I was able to write about real things that happen to teens here in the U.S. – like date rape and teen pregnancy and dating – with zero censorship from my publisher. It’s huge to me to be able to portray the nitty-gritty of real life but also portray faith and authenticity next to it.
I think it’s a great genre for young people because they’re able to see Skylar in situations that they might be in – divorcing parents, backstabbing friends, dating, and so forth – yet they also get to watch how her faith gets incorporated into it all.)
Tiež na Internete spravuješ webstránku GoTeenWriters, kde pomáhaš mladým, nádejným spisovateľom získavať skúsenosti, snažíš sa ich povzbudzovať, dávaš im rady a usporiadávaš spisovateľské súťaže. Je to fakt úžasné a parádne. Povedz, prosím, prečo to robíš?
Robím to hlave preto, pretože ma to baví. S blogom som začala po tom ako bola Out with the In Crowd vydaná, pretože som neustále dostávala maily od čitateľov v ktorých sa písalo, ako veľmi sa im séria páčila a že oni sú tiež spisovatelia a že by chceli nejaké rady. Romány som začala písať keď som bola na strednej a vždy som sa pri písaní cítila taká sama. Práve preto je pre mňa také vzrušujúce, že GoTeenWriters (aj ten blogový aj Facebookový) sa staly miestom, kde sa mladí autori navzájom stretávajú.
(You are also provider of GoTeenWriters side on the Internet where you hepl young aspiring writers to get writing skills, you try to encourage them, give them advices and provides writing contests. That is really great and awesome, so please tell us, why you do that?
I do it primarily because I enjoy it. I started the blog after Out with the In Crowd was released because I was always receiving mail from readers saying how much they loved the series and that they were writers too and wanted advice.
I started writing novels when I was in high school, and I always felt so alone when it came to writing. Because of that, it’s really exciting to me that Go Teen Writers both the blog and the Facebook page have become places where teen writers hang out with each other.)
Myslíš si, že mladí ľudia na celom svete majú talent a potenciál na to, aby písali dobrú literatúru? Prečo?
Určite. Milujem, milujem, milujem čítanie kníh, ktorých dej je zasadený do inej kultúry a objavovanie toho, aký je život v iných častiach sveta. Milujem objavovanie autorov z iných krajín!
Do you thing that young people all around world have talent and potential to write a good literature? Why?
Absolutely. I love, love, love reading books set in other cultures and discovering what life is like in other parts of the world. I love discovering authors from other countries!
Čo by si povedala, poradila mladým spisovateľom, ktorí čítajú tento blog, aby si ich povzbudila do písania?
Samozrejme, mám tak veľa rád, že som sama založila blog venovaný teen-spisovateľom, ale jedna z najdôležitejších vecí ktorú by som zdôraznila je, že písanie je niečo v čom sa zlepšujete tým, že TO ROBÍTE. Na strednej som neustále niečo písala, ale nikdy to nebolo na vydávanie. Napriek tomu, všetko to cvičenie bolo rozhodujúce, aby som mohla niečo vydať, keď som mala 24. Takže, ak chcete byť spisovatelia-PÍŠTE!!
(What would you tell, advice young, teen writers that read my blog to encourage them to write?
Of course I have so much advice that I started an entire blog dedicated to teen writers, but one of the biggest things I stress is that writing is something you get better at by DOING it. I wrote all the time as a teenager, but it was never anything publishable. Even still, all that practice was critical to me being published at age 24. So if you want to be a writer – WRITE!)
